Photograph
Take a photo of the found pet or prepare an electronic jpg of the lost pet.
Phone Vets & Check For Microchipping
Call as many vets in CT, especially vets in the area where the animal was lost / found (see table 2 below) to report (and send photos). Take found animal in to nearest vet to check for microchip.
Return To Area
Attach 5mtr washing line or rope (short lead does not work) and take dog to the spot where it was found. It may be able to lead you to its home. If you have moved house and your pet has disappeared from the new home, return to the old house to see if it has made an “incredible journey” home.

Log an entry on the following websites:

Important:
Do not divulge too much info re: found animal – give some leading clues and then the onus is upon the owner to correctly identify their pet (gender, discerning qualities). Do supply details of date, time and location where pet was found.

Posters
Put up posters with a photograph in all vets and pet shops around the area. If the dog had no collar or microchip or has signs of having been bred, chances are it wasn’t from a good home. Be discerning when owners come forward, and if you suspect mistreatment, contact the SPCA and they can inspect the property. If they believe the dog was mistreated, they will officially confiscate it and you can work with them to rehome the dog responsibly.

Follow-Up
Keep following up with SPCA and if the dog has not found its owner in the next week work at finding the animal a good home. ENSURE THAT THE ANIMAL GETS STERILISED.
Rescued Wildlife
Margo Wilkie – has a basket outside her house in Pinelands and rehabilitates birds and reptiles. She checks the basket through the night and any rescues can be left in the basket.
